Overhead Crane Operator and Supervisor Safety Training

Once you’ve successfully completed the MHSA Rigging Essentials course, you can expand your skills with our Overhead Crane Operator and Supervisor Safety training. Participants will learn all about the key operation and safety considerations for working with overhead cranes.

Format: Classroom and practical hands-on crane training
Duration: 1 Day
Time: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm
Prerequisites:
Successful completion of the MHSA Rigging Essentials course within the previous 12 months
PPE Required: Safety boots, hard hat, and gloves
Course Description
This 1-day interactive course is for workers who operate overhead cranes and for supervisors who oversee crane operation. This course has been created to follow the Alberta OHS “Guidelines for Safety Training of Overhead Crane Operators and Supervisors”. This course will teach participants how to safely use overhead cranes through a combination of classroom and practical instruction.
The classroom instruction consists of presentations and discussions, whereas the hands-on training involves demonstrations followed by practical exercises. All activities are led by an experienced instructor.
Topics include:
Legislated requirements
Overhead cranes, jib cranes, portable gantry cranes, monorail, and workstation cranes
Pre-operational requirements and post operational requirements
lift planning and hazard assessment
Operational requirements - safe operating position, controlling load swing
Turning a load over and tandem lifts
After completing our crane operator course participants will understand:
The principles and practices for using an overhead crane to lift a symmetrical and non-symmetrical load.
Why it’s important to apply the safe work practices and procedures in your workplace while operating overhead cranes or supervising.
When to seek direct supervision from a competent crane operator.
Please note that job-specific familiarization training and determination of competency are the sole responsibility of the employer.
Note: To pass the MHSA overhead crane training, participants must successfully complete a written exam and a practical confirmation, achieving a score of at least 80 percent on both.
