The MHSA Wants You to Be Sunsible!

Tue, 2017-06-06 09:28

Summertime has arrived in Alberta!

While we all love the warm weather and the sunshine, we also need to Be Sunsible.

What are some effects of UVR (ultraviolet radiation) exposure?

  • Intense exposure to UVR (long-term or chronic) can lead to sunburns, which are major risk factors in the development of melanoma and basal cell carcinoma.
  • Outdoor workers are at a 77% increased risk of squamous cell carcinoma as well as a 43% increased risk of basal cell carcinoma.
  • Up to 90% of all skin cancers associated with UVR exposure (resulting in the rise of melanoma, the most fatal form of skin cancer) are preventable.

How will this affect my business?

  • Time away from work- An employee may spend anywhere from 14-28 days away from work due to treatments and recovery from developing any type of melanoma.
  • Loss of productivity for your business.
  • Direct and indirect costs regarding the health benefits program.
  • Costly WCB claims and/or legal liabilities for employers who fail to provide a sun-safe work environment.

The direct and indirect costs of skin cancer in Alberta total more than $7.6 million every year. Being Sunsible helps protect your employees AND your business!

What can I do to make my workplace Sunsible?

  • Create a comprehensive “Sun Safety” program that meets your organizational needs.

For more information, visit www.BeSunsible.ca!

Did you know MHSA is celebrating 25 years?

Tue, 2017-05-09 14:24

As many of you may have heard it is MHSA's 25th Anniversary!

Please stay tuned to our website and your inboxes for further details, as they are released. In the meantime we ask that you simply save the date.

These celebratory events will be held on:

  • Tuesday September 26, 2017 in Edmonton
  • Wednesday, September 27, 2017 in Red Deer
  • Thursday, September 28, 2017 in Rocky View

During 2017, up until the end of September, MHSA will extend Charity Support to STARS Air Ambulance. You may notice their booth at some of our events this year or posters and banners in the our MHSA facilities. We invite you to help us!

In the 2015/2016 year STARS monitored 4200 industry sites every day to ensure worker safety. Since 1985, STARS Air Ambulance has conducted more than 33,000 missions. The cost of one flight is $5400.00, which equals to $1.00/second of an average 90 minute mission. What you may not know? The cost of training and education, emergency communication, air craft maintenance and other support services required for 24/7 monitoring are not part of this figure.

We are proud to support an essential health and safety service. We are determined to make this a monumental year to remember!

Day of Mourning - April 28, 2017

Fri, 2017-04-28 10:34

From a fellow MHSA staff member...

In describing the National Day of Mourning to my children one of my sons said “Oh you mean, Remembrance Day for Workers?” I couldn’t have worded it any better. Understanding was instantaneous and his young mind was reflecting on what that really meant. “That’s your job, right, to help people be safe so no one gets hurt?”

Lessons are learned every day, discoveries are made, ideas emerge and commitment is forged. Today is a day to recognize the cost, the loss, the heartache and the opportunity for better.

There are hazards in every task, but there is also opportunity for change in every act and the choices we make. Our safety and the safety of those we work with is in our hands; each as an individual and an employer. Let me share with you three questions that are the foundation to creating change. If we make these a part of how we take on every task we will be closer to an injury free work place.

“What could go wrong?”

“How bad could it be?”

“What am I doing about it?”

Recognition, understanding and commitment are the key for reduction and elimination of work place injuries, disabilities and fatalities.

Please take a moment today to remember the thousands of workers who have been killed, injured, or suffered illness as a result of work related incidents and pay respect to the family and friends who have been affected.
