Supporting Local Food Banks

Tue, 2016-11-08 13:47

Thank you all MHSA members and staff who assisted in raising $1500.00 at this years North vs. South Charity Golf Tournament.

We are proud to share with you that the funds were evenly distributed between the Edmonton Food Bank, Red Deer Food Bank Society and The Calgary Food Bank.

These non-profit organizations assist many working individuals that are struggling to make ends meet. Today, due to the economy even more individuals are in need of the Food Bank’s assistance. Parking lots are full, lineups are long and food is going out as fast as it is coming in. In the words of James McAra, CEO of the Calgary Food Bank “Food is the stuff of life. It nourishes our bodies and connects us to others. Good quality food should not be out of reach for anyone.”

Mike Bett, Southern Regional Manager of the Rocky View MHSA presents a cheque to Keoma Duce, Development Coordinator of Organizational Giving for the Calgary Food Bank.

To Another Successful "Take A Walk Day"

Tue, 2016-08-23 13:41

MHSA once again participated in WCB's "Take A Walk Day" and are proud to have received the following positive response from our campaign.

"Thank you both for the back talk (no pun intended) today and related hand out info, it is very much appreciated and timely as I’m in the process of updating our Manual Handling Standard and will use some of the information you have provided.

The walk a-round stretching exercises were easy and did not take long to complete and this is one aspect of our safe lifting program that we don’t currently do but would like to get it started here. I was wondering if you have an electronic version or know where I could download copies of the stretching and explanation exercises you provided in the handouts and that were displayed during our walk around as this is a great visual aid in getting employees to pre-stretch before starting work? I think once they see how easy it is to do they will be more inclined to perform them by themselves or as a team (preferred) prior to starting work.

Do you also have an electronic version of the Back to Basics Toolbox Meeting that I could use for sending in my request to conduct this toolbox talk?

Again, thanks for the luncheon and info today – it was well received."

On behalf of MHSA, thank you Frank Metherel of Shawcor for your feedback and to all who came out and joined your regional MHSA office in support of "Take A Walk Day."

Dan Clarke, certified by the Canadian Registered Board of Occupational Hygenists and the American Board of Industrial Hygiene and holds both ROH and CIH designations and is President of Clarke Consultants. Learn how to become qualified in Occupational Hygiene and to gain international and national accreditation. MHSA in partnership with Clarke Consultants will be offering a series of courses that will enable students to become competent under OHS legislation to conduct:

  • Monitoring for dusts, fumes and other particulates in air
  • Monitoring for gases and vapour in air
  • Monitor and assess the risk of occupational noise exposure
  • Learn about the toxic effects of hazardous substances and agents
  • Learn you to control exposures to hazardous substances
  • Learn how to evaluate and control the effects associated with heat and cold working environments

Those who complete all the required courses and complete the minimum experience will gain the International Certificate in Occupational Hygiene (ICertOH) and become eligible for registration with the Canadian Registration Board of Occupational Hygiene (ROHT or ROH).

Andrea Baker of The Alberta Health Services Workplace Health Team.  Andrea will be presenting a new pilot project targeted towards workplaces with outdoor workers. The project will help participating workplaces develop or improve their current sun safety program. An update on the Optional Health Element as part of the COR audit will also be provided. Please see the Workplace team at their booth for more information on both projects!

Pick up valuable information from the Workers' Compensation Board booth as well The Workplace Health Team (WHIP) will have a booth with details of their new endeavor.

For the first time this year we will also have ACESO Medical with us. ACESO Medical is the first fully integrated Family and Occupational Medical Clinic in the Edmonton area. By combining decades of experience and industry contacts, this hybrid clinic is well positioned to cater to the occupational medical needs of the Nisku Industrial Park, Leduc and south Edmonton.Occupational Medical Services is a growing field of both legally required and voluntary medical services designed to monitor, reduce and treat worker injuries.
