Patti Stark, Community Mobilization Coordinator for the Injury Prevention Centre. Injuries are a problem in Alberta and Canada. They take a major toll on personal lives, on society as a whole and cost the health care system enormously. But this issue is not hitting home. Generally people believe that injuries are just “accidents” – random acts, fate, and results of carelessness. In order to address the issue of injuries we need to change social culture to a point where injuries are not tolerated and considered socially unacceptable. Changing social culture and public attitudes is challenging, but it can be done. This talk will present Preventable, a successful social marketing campaign designed to engage Albertans in a direct conversation about preventable injuries.
