The Manufacturing Safety Officer (MSO) program was created in response to the growing need for expertise in the health and safety profession. Our program is designed for health and safety professionals who wish to elevate their health and safety career in the manufacturing sector. You will develop the competencies needed to boost your career and— most importantly—to create a safe and healthy workplace. Our program combines classroom training with valued work experience.

The MSO designation is widely accepted by Alberta’s manufacturing industry. Many employers are now encouraging their safety professionals to obtain the MSO designation.

University of Calgary and University of Alberta
Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Certificate Program

We’ve collaborated with the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary to give you a head start towards obtaining an Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) certificate. Those who possess a MSO are eligible to receive up to 21 hours of credit towards their OH&S certificate.

Qualifying for Admission

You are eligible for MSO designation if you meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum *3 years health and safety experience in the manufacturing industry 
  • Completed MSO courses
  • LSE Proficiency including the 4 required documents (HAA, Safety Meeting, Incident Investigation & Inspection)
  • A mark of 80% or higher on the MSO examination

*A combination of other related industry work may be accepted. Contact us for approval.

Administration Fee: $100.00 which includes review of application, approval if accepted, coordination of writing, marking and certificate if successful.

Program Completion and Certification

When you have completed all of the requirements, submit your MSO application for evaluation.

As of January 1, 2016 the MSO Maintenace Program requires the following:

- valid MHSA Auditor status (2 Audits & Auditor Refresher training must be completed every 3 years)

- valid First Aid Certificate

- Employed in a Health & Safety position within the Manufacturing sector with 50% of the time dedicated to a Health & Safety role (or 900 hours annually)
